Global Change Consulting Consortium, Inc.

Contracts fulfilled in work for the Consortium, and closely related projects

These are detailed on the right-hand column of the home page.  The first two contracts for the Consortium were on

·        Air pollution control at an oil terminal in Azerbaijan (a proprietary study) during evaporation of produced water. We extended Lagrangian transport models to incorporate the dynamics of water-droplet generation, evaporation, and outgassing. We thereby estimated the distribution of both solid particulates and gases across the site.

·        Comprehensive modeling of fluxes (water, water vapor, CO2, heat, radiation) in pecan orchards, using physiological and micrometeorological process models.  This project, which is ongoing, has the goal of devising the optimal strategy of deficit irrigation, for preserving the greatest fraction of nut yield with a specified cutback in water availability.

The project is tied to a parallel effort in satellite remote sensing of evaporative water use by orchards (evapotranspiration).  Under separate contracts, the Consortium members and a part-time employee are automating all steps an energy-balance method for computing evapotranspiration (ET), from locating and retrieving satellite imagery to producing maps and GIS files of ET.  Completed to date are:

·        A sensitivity analysis (in press, Trans. Amer. Soc. Agric. Biol. Engineers) of the algorithm for processing satellite data.  With this study, we have identified the surface parameters that are most important to estimate accurately.

·        Major improvement of the calculation of ET on sparsely-vegetated landscapes, by extracting details of surface conditions.  This work applies to newly established orchards with low cover.  More importantly, it is applicable to basin-wide and statewide estimates of water fates for water managers.

·        A related review (PDF, 1.8 MB) of how well remote sensing can enable estimates of water stress, fire hazard, fire progress, and insect damage.

Acquisition and management of grants and contracts in prior academic work, constituting large multi-year projects

Dr. Gutschick has held a number of federal, regional, and university grants. These grants inherently involved financial and personnel management.

Additional management experience includes a year as program officer at the National Science Foundation and leadership of university-wide programs

Endorsement of Dr. Gutschick's qualifications from Prof. Louis J. Gross, University of Tennessee, on LinkedIn.com

"It is still a rarity to find individuals such as Vince who have the ability to consider complex biological systems from a holistic viewpoint, with the experience to know what details to include and what may readily be ignored to investigate basic as well as applied questions in biology. Vince is a modeler with both the mathematical intuition and biological insight necessary for analysis of life science questions involving multiple scales and levels in the biological hierarchy."

Dr. Gutschick appreciates the global nature of issues.  He has collaborated extensively with researchers and institutions in the US, France, Australia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Israel, and England.  He has visited 35 nations.  He speaks French and can communicate in print in Spanish.  He reviews for a number of national and international journals as well as occasionally for US and European funding agencies.
